Wallflowers

Tiny movement inviting a large dose of curiosity

During this project I was interested in the repetition of a simple movement. I had originally tried working with muscle wire, but there were a few problems working with it at the desired scale.

The idea behind this piece is that on top there would have been a bunch of flowers that all look and move the same, and below there would have been the little components (or personalities as I like to think of them). Though, I had a lot of trouble connecting the wires from the flowers and having the little components all on the crankshaft, so in the end I separated them.

Looking at Space Through Light

I was interested in the feeling of ambiguous space and how one could create it on a small scale. Having had the pleasure of experiencing Doug Wheeler’s Untitled (sprayed lacquer on acrylic with neon tubing) from 1969 - a medium sized white room with rounded corners and a neon light outline of a square placed in the centre of one of the walls- I found myself unable to fully perceive the depth of the room.

In these dioramas I used light to help challenge the perception of space. I created what one could call a mathematical space within the box and then projected the contents shadow onto a translucent screen. The viewer is allowed to pick up a box and move it in front of a light, allowing the shadows to shift and change the space. In some, the three-dimensional space is flattened to a two-dimensional representation of the former. And in others the shadows extend past the boundaries of the box, creating the illusion of a larger space.

LEDs inside the flowers light up when the switches below touch (sort of like an LED wind chime).
